The good thing about online shopping is that you don’t have to leave your house to do it. The bad thing about online shopping is that you don’t have to leave your house to do it. What are the advantages of online shopping as opposed to a physical store? There are many pros to the online shopping experiences.
One of the best reasons to shop online is to make sure that you are getting the best value for your money. You can always do price comparisons online even when you are going to the store in person. This way you can feel good about your purchase and know that you will be saving money from getting the range of prices.
Shopping online is no longer a new trend but now just a regular part of life for most of the general public. Retailers and brand marketing executive certainly use this to attract and distract consumers. There are the name brand stores, online stores, online shopping “malls” and discount sites. Then there is the second tier of retailers who resell high demand products at a higher rate or on have brands advertise on their IG or blogs with recommendations.
In the beginning, online shopping was risky because you couldn’t be sure that you were getting what was advertised and it was complicated and inconvenient to return items that were not right. This is probably the biggest change over the years as now, even Amazon will send you merchandise to “try on” and you can keep what you like and return what you don’t. All with easy pre packaged shipping.
Then there’s the phenomenon of the limited edition “drops” where Gen Z consumers set their alarms to make sure they don’t miss a second of the reveal from their favorite and hottest streetwear lines. Brands like Bape and Supreme have literally lines out the door, bouncers and wait times of up to 3 hours just to go into their flagship locations.
Finding the best online shopping stores can take some research. But once you find reliable sites and good prices, you can feel good about buying. The elements of a good online shopping store is availability, choice, price range, shipping methods, payment options and return policies. There are even very popular used clothes online shopping stores that offer the same thrill of the vintage thrift store hunt.
Here is a list of advantages:
- Convenience: there is no doubt that this is the more convenient way to shop. You can be in your PJs and do it any time of night or day. This makes it very easy, especially when you know exactly what product you want.
- Choice: the sky’s the limit for most online shopping variety. You can find numerous resources for your purchase from anywhere in the globe. You can search in a matter of minutes that in a shopping mall could take days. I remember combing through the racks of store after store in search of an image I had in my head. But online, I can google even just an idea and come up with choices.
- Price check: an obvious advantage to be able see a range of prices, discounts and sales online so that you can be sure to get the best deals. There are sites that you can sign up on to receive notifications when your items are reduced, available, etc.
- No crowds! This is one of my favorite reasons to shop online. Without having to fight for that last Frida Floral Bikini Set you can take your time to look and decide on your purchase.
- No pushy salespeople or uninterested customer service representatives: online shopping gives information in a non threatening way. You can look up the reviews, testimonials, buying guides, company background, etc.
- Return policy: Almost all internet stores will do their best to make your purchase guaranteed for satisfaction, accuracy and painless exchange or refund.
Here are a few disadvantages of online shopping:
- Quality: sometimes you just can’t tell how good a product is by a picture. The ability to feel, touch, smell and try on an item before purchasing can’t really be replaced with digital shopping. Especially with fabric and the cut. The outfit might look stunning on the model but in person is just not the right fit.
- Quickness: there are times when I needed something right away that even with fastest shipping method would just be impossible to get in time. Not to mention that overnight shipping fees can make the value of an online deal through the roof more expensive than going and picking it up at a store. One of my favorite ways to shop actually is to purchase online and pick up at the store. In my opinion, that can be the best of both worlds.
- Lack of customer service: who here has tried to live chat with a representative online only to wait and wait and get disconnected or to discover that you’re talking to computer robot who has very limited standard responses? This can be extremely frustrating when trying to make sure you’re getting the right item or if you need to ask a question. Or sometimes, they just don’t have customer service readily available so you are left to a random generic email or their website Q & A.
- Too much of a good thing ? Sometimes the wide range online can actually be a bit overwhelming or for me can occasionally seem off putting if your sought after brand shows up on a discount or less than attractive site. It can be challenging to not get distracted by other online activities, articles, etc while searching online. So what was at first for a quick shop, could drag on before you know it you’ve wasted an hour and still didn’t even find what you were looking for.
Online shopping in America is certainly on the rise at a rate of approximately 9%-10% of retail sales. E-commerce is evolving and seems to be on a steady increase as the brands and merchants streamline the process and gain momentum with our one click generation. It is predicted to rise to about 15% by 2021.
To run a successful brick and mortar store in this climate, you must take advantage of the e commerce option. The retailers that offer both will be in a good position to keep their current clientele and also be able to build a new consumer base online.
