One of the first tricks I learned in the style world is how to make any outfit look more curated by using a third layer–and I don’t mean your coat. I mean blazers, vests, scarves, cardigans, and hats.
My favorite layering piece: the blazer. Everyone knows how to wear a blazer in the office, but did you know your blazer should be getting way more mileage in your everyday wardrobe?
Blazers transition you from winter to spring/summer, add shape to a flowy outfit, and give an otherwise plain outfit a standout accent. This is one staple that every fashionista should have in her wardrobe whether you work in an office or not.
Since I wanted to show why a blazer is a capsule piece, I considered whether or not I should do a black blazer, However, I chose not to style traditional classic black blazers for this article because it’s actually not best for all complexions (see my article on finding your style), i.e. if you’re a spring (color theory 101), it’s not the best color for your face.
Black can also be too formal for everyday wear. I remember working at Abercrombie in my college days when they wouldn’t carry black because it was too formal of a color.
Instead, I find the best casual and classic blazer for every wardrobe is in the color navy. It’s the perfect color to transition any season from day to night.
I chose this Daphne Check Blazer in navy because the fabric is soft and cozy while still having some structure. Creative Director and Designer, Wendy Jung, is an expert at striking that balance, so, of course, French Mauve is my go-to for casual clothes that still look elegant. It’s also great to support slow fashion designers that make sure every piece is curated for quality over quantity.
Here are my favorite things to pair with a blazer:

Classic Jeans and a Tee
Blazers with jeans always look smart. I like to wear this look any time I want to look put together for any occasion. It’s easily elevated by putting a pin on your lapel, whether vintage or Chanel.
It’s also easily dressed down with sneakers or sandals, or dressed up with heels. I like to pair with a funky bag to keep the outfit interesting.
Sweet but Edgy
Wearing a crop top is the perfect companion with any oversized blazer. I love sandwiching this tiny top underneath oversized wide leg pants and some heels for date night or my chunky combat boots for a girls night out. Other spins on this would be a form fitting bodysuit or a silky camisole.
Athleisure
Can you imagine anything more comfortable than going out in joggers, a hoodie, and your sneakers? I can’t. Unfortunately this can also look a little homely without styling.
Adding this blazer is a no-brainer to look effortlessly chic. This look would be perfect with a Gucci crossbody bag.
Other blazer outfit ideas:
Wear with your favorite colored faux leather pants, a bodysuit, and Converse sneakers
Wear as a belted dress with thigh high boots or with a slipdress underneath(I’m 5’7” so I’m a little too tall to do it this way for this particular jacket, unless I size up. It would be perfect if you are 5’5” and under)
Over a Dress
Wear with biker shorts or tailored shorts
Belted with a bouffant skirt
Wear with a turtleneck
I put together a little Pinterest mood board to inspire you later. Happy Styling!
