Summer is here and shorts are a must. Every season and every decade we’ve found new ways to keep leggings in our wardrobes after the 1959 Lycra invention. And it’s no wonder why. Read my article on how we did 80s leggings here.
Considered by many to be a polarizing trend, the 90s biker shorts outfit is an extremely flexible look. From wearing as an undergarment, an alternative to leggings for the warmer months, to a bodysuit, you can do anything with it.
Jacquemus, Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, Saint Laurent, Dion Lee, and Off-White knew it was time for a resurgence for their 2018 Spring-Summer collections at Fashion Week and the trend has been continuously popping up ever since from celebrities to London’s 2020 catwalk.
Though it started to revive in 2018 as a more subdued black, bike shorts have been seen in wild prints and patterns, as well as sparkly, staying true to what some dub as the Princess Diana trend. I personally prefer the more subtle, every day version easily achieved by keeping the trend traditional black biker shorts; I wear it with a little edge by changing the material to vegan leather.
Or if you want to keep your biker short outfit ideas super flexible for even the gym, buy your shorts in a stretch cotton like Princess Diana and Kim Kardashian.
1. Paired with a blazer and cinch belt
With so many people working at home these days, this is the perfect trend to take you from your Zoom appointment with an oversized blazer, to a night out, to a comfortably chic weekend in.
This pairing can be seen all over Instagram and runways alike. It’s tried and true and easy to wear without showing too much skin. For a universally flattering look, choose a short dress length blazer and if you want to keep it casual, choose a structured blazer with a more casual material. Throw on a baseball cap, boots or metallic oxfords to bring this look together.
2. Under a sheer dress or skirt
This is one of my favorite ways to wear biker shorts. A lot of girls wear hot pants underneath sheer dresses/skirts, but I prefer the more modest approach by wearing a pair of biker shorts underneath.
Some of these are sold out, so here are similar:
Kate Spade’s new version of the bag comes in 2 parts with multiple customizable flap options.
3. Sporty and casual
Try it with a long button down shirt and a crop top underneath–perfect for a long day of walking during a vacay. Or a sweatshirt and utility belt for on-the-go. This is definitely a summer look when showing a lot of skin is the easiest way to keep cool. When it’s hot and humid I opt for sheer shirts and crop tops, matching my leather crop top to my shorts.
With biker shorts, even just the basics are stylish. Let me know how you style your look with #livingplum.
