This pandemic year has been less about ‘things’ and more about ‘connecting’ with loved ones. Needless to say, Christmas decorating has taken quite a DIY direction this year for us all. Holiday decorating has always been one of my favorite family activities–from decorating cookies to trimming the tree. This year, we’ve included lots of home DIY projects to keep us extra merry.
One of my favorite diy christmas ideas: Make holiday signs. Cheesy as it can be year round, during the holidays, signs can completely transform our home into a winter wonderland.
By putting a ski lodge sign by the front door, we can become a chalet in the Swiss Alps. Or, a ‘fresh cut trees’ sign can create a cozy lodge motif for a tree cutting farm. Signs can transport you in style, even when you’re stuck at home.
I’ve found some gorgeous DIY ideas on Instagram and Pinterest in using these styles:
- Printables
- Wooden Signs
- Holiday Stencils
- Letter Boards
- Script Walls
Printables
If you need an easy diy and prefer a minimalist style or are in a time crunch, printables are a great way to go! It just requires a printer. I am loving this DIY because it looks rather professional for the price of a printer and the printable.
Personally, I like to frame paper signs in black, but you can also use printables as homemade stencils to create your own look. Canva is a great resource for making printables yourself.
Wooden Signs
Nothing brings out the holiday cheer like a joy sign in a farmhouse style made from reclaimed wood. Though farmhouse signs aren’t the only wooden christmas style! Christmas trees made from birch wood branches make a classic Scandinavian style; or go all out rustic Christmas with wood slices (wood slices also make awesome ornaments). Here is one of my favorite wood slice projects. Or check out this awesome reversible snowman/fall pumpkin wood slice video below:
Holiday Stencils
Making the perfect Merry Christmas sign isn’t always easy if you aren’t known for your lettering skills. However, with a simple alphabet stencil, you can bring this holiday decor to your front porch.
The best time to take a risk and re-make those outdated items in your home as something new is the holidays. My favorite idea right now is to use stencils to create wall-sized scrolls. This is also a great opportunity to turn that old wooden cutting board into a holiday sign, or to paint that tchotchke that your grandma gave you last Christmas.
One of the biggest DIY trends I’ve seen is to buy a Cricut and do vinyl lettering for a clean store-bought look. Christene Holder over at Keys To Inspiration made a colorful Merry Christmas sign using vinyl stencils on white wood.
For those of us that don’t want to buy a Cricut, buy tracing paper and save money by tracing printed paper and painting what you trace.
One idea I did not see on Pinterest is how to use aerosol spray can snow in windows. Using a stencil would be a great way to make a big impact on a front window, or to wake up to freshly fallen snow every morning with window snowflakes.
Letter Boards
I used a letter board to make my holiday bar menu last year, but, letter boards are used by restaurants for a reason! You can change them regularly with your mood and holiday season. It’s a great investment because you can leave it out year round as personalized home decor.
My favorite part is you can customize this as often as you want–even daily! It can make a fantastic daily Christmas countdown, add humor to a room, or remind your loved ones to enjoy the season.
Script Walls
Use your walls as the canvas. I’ve been seeing so many cool walls with wooden or wire letters in copper wire or covered in greenery. I’ve also seen pine wired pipe cleaners to spell out holiday words, like “Cheer” or “Joy.”
What’s great about script walls is you can make a big statement wall inside, on the front porch, in a window, or even the backyard.
Feel inspired to take on a family project this holiday season?
