There’s nothing harder when you begin decorating your dream home than where to start. Especially when you have that one room that you just can’t seem to decorate. So why not take a page out of a set designer’s lookbook? I find it’s way more educational than watching a television series like Extreme Makeover Home Edition or random home makeovers since every set designers’ grand design is to make their character homes look lived-in.
9. This is Us
Besides being an amazing show, it also has great style. I love the details of this room, like the pillows on the floor and the lanterns by the fireplace. And of course, the architectural details are beautiful as well, like the ceiling and matching mantle. But most of all, this room is worth studying for layout tips. Everything is perfectly spaced! The rug is exactly the right size and defines the space, the baskets/end tables add dimension and height, the curtains are hung slightly higher than the windows, textures and color are used well…it’s a great study on how to design a room! I imagine Chip and Joanna Gaines would approve.
8. Chuck
This show had to make the list since it’s a favorite show of mine. Usually dark bathrooms aren’t my favorite because I prefer light and airy spaces…especially in bathrooms, but there’s something very romantic about this space! I know it’s more of an architectural thing, but because I had to screenshot this bathroom since no one else seemed to notice this little gem, I had to include it. The Spanish tiling, the arch over the bathtub, the free standing mirror and stool, and fairly minimal design, all work together and create a room made for relaxation and candlelight. Can’t get enough!! If I had to love it or list it, I would definitely love it and keep it forever. This place actually exists in Burbank in the Los Angeles area.
7. Mad Men
Mid-century decor isn’t going anywhere! And though we may not be designing our houses with conversation pits (I saw a conversation pit being leveled once on a Fixer Upper episode), TV’s are taking a backseat once again and we’re entertaining in our living rooms around the fireplace. This room also gives color a backseat and is mainly neutral with subtle pops here and there. One thing we can definitely learn from Mad Men – If you have a neutral palette, you can change your pillows every season without any color conflicts! I could see Drew and Jonathan Scott from Property Brothers designing this room with a modern twist. But the standout that I love in this room is the Charles Eames style lounge chair.
6. Pushing Daisies
What home improvement article would be complete without ideas for wallpaper? This show always reminds me of the fashion designer, Betsey Johnson. It’s bold, it’s loud, and as long as the pattern scale is right, it’s not afraid of anything–even multiple patterns next to each other. And floral patterns have definitely made a come back! Bobby Berk from Queer Eye would love these spaces. Though many design shows use wallpaper in their designs, I would choose a temporary wallpaper for easy removal when the trend ends. It’s a great way to update a room without the hassle later on.
5. The Handmaid’s Table…I mean, Tale
I’m in love with these 3 little fresh flower vases on this oval table. At first sight, this room feels a little formal, but there are so many beautiful elements! Did you notice the birdcage by the window filled with a planter? And the veining on the mantle marble is made of designer dreams! My biggest complaint is this room is too dark, but the show is pretty dark, so I’ll giv’em the one.

If you want to be bold, but still add classic elements, this kitchen is one to study! I’m particularly fond of the long black bench with the awesome back support. If any of you know where I can find it, let me know! I’ve seen this turn-of-the-century style bench in home makeover shows a couple of times now and I’ve been wanting one.
3. 2 Broke Girls
I love the ideas you can get from this Americana mid-century modern space. There are elements I would never have thought of. Like the dog painting on a stand–what a creative way to display your art if you have all windows and no wall space! I very much love the leather chairs as well since they’re great if you have pets, but want fabric chairs. It’s also a great lesson in mixing patterns. All of the patterns use the color palette and the right scale, therefore, don’t clash. Did you notice the stools in front of the bookcase as well? What a fantastic idea for extra seating! The height difference pairs beautifully. If I ever live in New York, I’m totally looking for those old twenties-style industrial windows for my loft!
2. Genevieve’s Renovation
Without including at least ONE home renovation show, this list would be incomplete! And I’m lusting after this renovation. It’s one of my favorite makeover shows. I couldn’t actually pick which room to show you because of it, so I decided to use the door. Why? Because something we often forget when we decorate, is architectural elements. Adding stained glass to a window, a different door, or painting a ceiling, can be a perfect way to add a luxe touch.
1. Hannibal
If I were house hunting, I would never leave this place! The owners would just have to let me sleep in this room until the sale closed. And as Jeff Lewis would say, I don’t mind an immediate no as long as I can have an immediate yes! I have always dreamt about a living wall in my house. Something about fresh herbs, lettuce, and/or succulents just makes everything feel so lush. And don’t you just love the table, doors, and textured walls?
One room this list is missing is a minimalist room, so if you know of any shows that include minimalism, tell me below! And also, what shows inspire your decorating dreams? House Hunters renovation? Trading Spaces?
