I dream of achieving clinic-level skincare results without ever leaving my couch.
Wishful thinking? Well, it’s not! See my before and after at the end for the improvements in my skin using an at home rf device with microneedle patches.
Radio frequency microneedling may be a staple in professional clinics, but at-home devices and patches are quickly gaining traction. And why wouldn’t it when you can experience the benefits while fitting into your busy schedule.
While I love to go into a professional clinic when I need a little guidance, the reality of scheduling appointments and leaving the house has zero appeal compared to how easy and effective at-home options can be. After all, who knows your schedule—and your skin—better than you do?
At-Home Radio Frequency Microneedling: Intensive or Targeted
You could try full-on microneedling with radio frequency by following my post here, however, I’ve found comfort in the safety of microneedling patches, which spot treat my wrinkles safely and effectively. My results (see my 4 week review) with radio frequency alone are enough to never touch microneedling again…aside from the treatment area.
For me, the combination of radio frequency and microneedling patches has been a revelation. While both techniques create micro-injuries to stimulate collagen production, microneedling goes just a bit deeper. And unless you have deep wrinkles all over, you might not need the full microneedling treatment either. That’s where patches come in—they let you focus on problem areas without overdoing it.
RF microneedling is for more than just wrinkles
A 2014 study found RF microneedling moderately improved acne scars in 58% of participants (Radiofrequency Microneedling: Procedure, Aftercare, Side Effects, Cost). Another review from 2021 included 42 high-quality studies, supporting its use for skin rejuvenation and acne vulgaris (Systematic review of radiofrequency microneedling studies unveiled | MDedge Dermatology).
Amazing right? It could also be useful for acne prone skin since RF microneedling can shrink sebaceous glands (5 Important Things To Know About Microneedling Radiofrequency).
I’ve partnered with Currentbody for this project because they’ve paired their RF tool with two patches (one for 11 lines, wrinkles, and crows feet) made specifically for their device. How’s that for upping your chance of being highly effective with home rf? Best part is you only need to do this once a week. Making it a perfect candidate for my Sunday self care night.
So why exactly do I favor these Currentbody patches?
Here are all the ingredients broken down:
Sodium Hyaluronate
Super hydrator, makes skin plump and juicy.
Butylene Glycol
Keeps the patch moist, helps stuff soak in.
Acetyl Hexapeptide-8
Chill pill for wrinkles, relaxes your face muscles…picture botox lite.
Copper Tripeptide-1
Heals skin, makes it stronger and bouncy.
Oligopeptide-29 & Oligopeptide-32
Team up to smooth fine lines and firm skin.
Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4
Boosts collagen, keeps skin tight and young.
Glyceryl Caprylate
Fights germs, keeps the patch clean–similar to a fatty acid because of the caprylic acid.
Xylitol
Hydrates and calms skin down.
Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid
Tiny hydrator that sinks deep into skin.
Pinus Densiflora Leaf Extract
Antioxidant from pine trees, protects skin.
Artemisia Princes Leaf Extract
Soothes redness, chill vibes for skin.
Sophora Flavescens Root Extract
Calms irritation, good for sensitive skin.
1,2-Hexanediol
Keeps the patch fresh, fights bacteria.
Ethylhexyiglycerin
Another germ-killer, keeps things safe.
Basically, it’s a dissolving microneedle hydration bomb that penetrates the skin and visibly improves, firms, and calms your face while fighting wrinkles and without microplastics. I love that the heavy hitter active ingredients are peptides. This list is fairly water friendly too making it a versatile patch to use with radio frequency AND microcurrent. Not easy to do–read my microcurrent gel article for more on that.
How to Combine RF and Patches for Maximum Results
Now, you might be wondering how to combine these microneedle patches with your radio frequency device for maximum effectiveness. I asked Zubda, a product expert at CurrentBody, and here’s what she shared:
“The RF device can be used while patches are initially applied and you can use the device over the patches as well as other areas of the face as you would do when carrying out RF treatment on its own. Or if you want to do it the next day you need to remove the patches, rub in any excess serum in and then use the device, but you may find your skin is slightly sensitive this way round.”
My favorite Sunday night ritual?
Start with the RF treatment to prep my skin, then apply the microneedle patch with hyaluronic acid on my forehead and leave it overnight to lock in those results. Easy peasy!
